A High Note?
After a very combative week I’d like to think of Saturday as a high note. Ok this would more aptly be described as a darkly humorous, slightly sad and weird note but some of you may have caught the statements of Texas Judge Tom Head made earlier this week:
(Obama is) going to try to hand over the sovereignty of the United States to the U.N., and what is going to happen when that happens? I’m thinking the worst. Civil unrest, civil disobedience, civil war maybe. And we’re not just talking a few riots here and demonstrations, we’re talking Lexington, Concord, take up arms and get rid of the guy.
Now obviously someone so paranoid has no business being in public office, whatever can be done to remove this guy probably should, and much has been made about this but everything I’ve seen has ignored the larger issue. This quote is just a public articulation of a common conspiracist claim usually made by people like Alex Jones.
Jones and other conspiracists have been claiming for years that the president, whoever they may be at the time, are about to hand over the sovereignty of the U.S. to the U.N. This tinfoil hatter sentiment has long been just beneath the surface of some critiques of international collaboration from NAFTA to NATO so there’s really no reason Judge Head’s critique should have been treated as a one-off remark. I guess what I’m really saying is, as Brad Delong likes to say, “Why oh why can’t we have a better press corps?”
