Atheist Challenge Day 1. At what point did you know you were an atheist? Why did you become one, what were the factors leading up to the decision, if you weren’t always one?
I’ve previously posted a long story version of exactly how this happened but in short I was questioned on what exactly my religious beliefs were by a classmate when I was 14. When asked my religion I responded Christian. When asked which denomination I had no answer since I really knew very little about religion despite many members of my extended family being very religious and having previously repeatedly professed that Jesus was my lord and savior mostly at their behest.
Really out of embarrassment more than anything else I decided to look into religion immediately and I went at it that night. I sat down at my computer and scrolled through countless Wikipedia entries on all the reasons for and against Christianity and the existence of gods. I soon began to realize that there was no reason to believe one religion over any other and I remember at one point covering my mouth in shock as I found every argument for the existence of god refuted. I knew before I got up from the computer that I was an atheist.
Still further research was called for and after having done it my position was not altered but strengthened. Since then I’ve been an admitted baby-eating atheist.
