What do you say to people when they say that atheists must have no purpose in life, as they see no reason to be moral and see life as meaningless? Generally, I'm just so annoyed that I walk away.

Of course, you think, the universe will still be (and is) awesome without belief in god and being immoral will still feel bad and hurt others. However it can be easy to forget that someone who really thinks they get their morality exclusively from their religion might honestly see no other options.

One of the mistakes they are making is confusing two paths with the same end result for two paths being equal. They are literally saying only the end result matters and accordingly I try to explain to them why this is false. After all war and sanctions can actually produce the same results but no one would argue that therefore it doesn’t matter which of the two options governments choose. Moreover if they think the only reason to be moral is to what god wants them to then they have completely confused obedience for morality and I try to explain the difference between doing what is right because it’s the better option and not simply to satisfy a proposed deity.

Sorry if this is a bit brief but it really depends on the person as my response is catered to what I think will most resonate with the believer. However you can view a more philosophically pleasing general answer for why people don’t really believe life would be meaningless without god here.

Thanks for the question.
